Marierrota (Mendexa)

Located in the marshes of the Lea River, a few metres from the estuary. Of the ancient Marierrota mill, built in the 16th century and demolished in 1980, only the dam remains.

It was a tide-mill, similar to river mills. The difference lay in the big, masonry dam that filled up with seawater at high tide. The reservoir emptied slowly as the tide ran out, setting the mill´s machinary into motion.

Nowadays the mill has been rebuilt and there is an interpretation centre there. However, it is closed to the public.
